Fruit and vegetable farming & harvesting in the UK

The main area of work is in edible horticulture and the main crops are asparagus, berries (strawberries, blueberries etc.), salads, vegetables, hops, and apples.

Opportunities for both males and females, as well as couples and/or friends working together. No previous farming experience needed

Employment opportunities consist mainly of the following:

Picker

Manual harvesting of crops (may include rig work / hand tools).

Crop maintenance and husbandry

Planting, weeding, de-leafing, pruning, bud rubbing, thinning, tying down, and any aspects related to crop health.

Tunnel worker

Construction / skinning of crop protection, venting and maintenance, preparing growing areas / tabletop systems / raised beds / installing and removing growing media / dismantling.

Irrigation worker

Installation and maintenance.

Packhouse worker

Packing and processing of crops, labelling, sorting, grading, and loading.

Tractor driving

Seasonal requirements for primary production (mowing/ spraying/ harvest/ carting). These are limited positions.

Requirements for seasonal employment in the United Kingdom

The profile of the UK applicant

  • Applicants need to be fit and healthy, able to perform long hours of physical work
  • Age: able to do a long day’s work with ease
  • No previous experience of work on fruit farms is required
  • A valid passport is required
  • A clean criminal record
  • Sufficient funds to pay for the visa, flight, transport from the airport to the farm, living cost
  • Access to PC and Wi-Fi for online application
  • Fully vaccinated (required by UK employers)

Character

  • As long hours of physical farm labor are expected, a passion for farming and the outdoors is required to contribute towards a successful and fulfilling season of farm work in the UK.
  • The ability to adapt – both to step up to the larger international farming platform and to leave the security of home and loved ones behind – is an important skill.
  • An employer may expect varying farm related duties from their workers and workers need to be willing to work and keep a positive mindset.
  • The ability to manage stressful circumstances and handle pressure is part of the ever-changing farming environment. This also includes working in challenging weather
